In the wake of the health crisis, many people have set up a fitness room in their home, so that they can continue exercising in spite of everything. From bedrooms and living rooms to garages, terraces and gardens, you can transform any room with enough space into a gym room. But do you know which area of the house is the most suitable? What surface area do you need to create a physical activity zone indoors? What temperature should you maintain to avoid suffocation?

Defining the room in which to install the gym

The choice of the ideal room depends on the amount of space you have. In a studio, the main room – and therefore the largest – is the one to choose, albeit with some mobility constraints. In an apartment, we recommend the bedroom, a place where you feel safe and in harmony. At home, I recommend exercising in a room where you feel at ease, as stress hormones are released when you don’t feel well and prevent you from exercising effectively. If you want to exercise at home, you will need a minimum of two to five meters of space. If you practice activities such as yoga or meditation, slightly more than the size of a yoga mat (1.70 m) is sufficient.

Defining the room in which to install the gym

Create a dedicated gym room whenever possible

Once again, this will depend on the space you have at home. However, if you decide to dedicate a room to your sporting activity, you’ll feel psychologically more in harmony with your hobby.

A bedroom, attic or garage can become a sports room, provided it’s well-ventilated and has a minimum surface area of 10 m2 to accommodate heavy equipment such as machines. If you’re creating a tailor-made sports room, you can install a micro-room hidden behind a concealed door, or separate the space with a cloister or glass roof to take advantage of natural light from another room.

Create a dedicated room whenever possible

Regulate the temperature of the gym room

When exercising indoors, it’s a good idea to keep the room well ventilated, especially to regulate humidity levels. To avoid overheating or freezing, it is essential to maintain a certain temperature. We recommend keeping a moderate temperature, neither too low nor too high, between 16 and 20 degrees. If possible, ventilate as much as possible and avoid fans or air-conditioning, which encourage dust to rise. Simply leave a window open during your session.

The key to achieving your fitness goals is designing a gym room that motivates and inspires you. Your exercises may be more fun and you may be more motivated to stick with your fitness program if your gym is attractive. Let’s look at some inspiring gym room decoration ideas to make your area a sanctuary for your fitness that will invigorate and empower you:

A green training area

In a large home gym, you can divide the space into two areas: a cardio area, close to the openings, and a strength training area. Warm materials such as wood and a green wall provide a more pleasant atmosphere than the classic industrial style found in gyms.

Position treadmills and indoor bikes in front of large picture windows for unobstructed views. A wood-clad ceiling echoes the parquet flooring on the diagonal, balancing the atmosphere of the space.

An exercise area in the living room

It’s perfectly possible to install a fitness area in a living room. When square meters are in short supply, you can add your training area to the living room, taking care to separate the spaces with a visual demarcation. Floor mats in shades of grey not only protect the wooden floor, but also absorb shocks.

Sports equipment such as a treadmill and weight bench are in shades of black to blend in with the decor. The rest of the living room is as inviting as it gets: white marble wall cladding, interior wood cladding and a green wall panel make this space a pleasure to be in.

Install a gym in a garage

For those who don’t have a vacant room indoors for a gym, it’s always possible to set up this workout space in the garage. Of course, ensure that you properly insulate the room. Indeed, If you use this space on a daily basis, it should have an insulation factor greater than R-27.

The focus here is on a completely uncluttered look, cleverly highlighted by the whiteness of the walls and the entry of light from the garage door.

A room as a personal gym

A personal gym can be set up in an apartment bedroom. To avoid noise complaints from neighbors, the focus is on acoustics. The decor is minimalist so as not to interfere with range of movement, while a full-height mirror visually enlarges the space.

A neoclassical home gym room

A bright, stylish home gym is an important motivator. You can decorate it in the style that suits you best. In a neoclassical interior, moldings continue into the training area. The treadmills face the windows, while a large mirror reflects the light, making this all-black room luminous. To add a touch of greenery and warmth to the space, we installed a plant wall in which a neon-lit mantra inspires us day after day.
