Designing and decorating a kid’s room requires a minimum of thought so that he or she feels comfortable. Practical, security or aesthetic aspects: we take stock.

The bedroom is a real place of life for the kid: he sleeps, plays, works and takes refuge there. It is therefore essential that he feels good in his domain. To define the decoration of the kid’s room, you must take into account his age, his personality and his desires. To do this, choose the theme and color in agreement with him.

You prefer a marine theme and he is more into soccer? Leave a blank wall or closet for him to pin up pictures of his idols at his leisure. Or provide a shelf for his medals, cups and other celebrations. Finally, the frieze solution can be ideal for a small but effective touch of the style of his choice.

Don’t choose furniture that is too much like a kid’s bed (car or boat shaped bed, princess dresser…). When you agree on a theme, keep in mind that there is a good chance that his desires will evolve according to fashion and his own tastes. Prefer decorating with small touches to a massive and repeated accumulation of the same print or theme.

Bed linens, cushions, curtains, accessories and wall colors can be changed for a small fee in due time. The layout varies according to the surface of the room. The minimum is obviously the bedding. Immediately after that, there is storage space for clothes and toys.

To give substance to your ideas, gather, cut and paste samples of fabrics, wallpapers and photos corresponding to the desired atmosphere: this overview will allow you to confirm or deny your first impressions.

As far as possible, the design of a kid’s room should be a common ground and not a source of conflict by trying to impose one’s own choices. Parents can enjoy themselves if the room is for a toddler (0 to 5 years old) but beyond that, the child’s tastes must be taken into account (with a certain amount of restraint because children change their minds quickly), not to mention the teenager’s room for which parents hardly have a say!

The girl’s room

From birth to adolescence, your daughter’s room deserves a feminine decoration but not too much. Far from clichés, leave the total pink look aside and prefer touches here and there or more pastel shades with coral to powder pink.

Honor the white, taupe without neglecting the purple and even invite blue, a color that is no longer the prerogative of boys, no, no. Also, play the card of patterned wallpaper, from small flowers to animals and subdue the atmosphere with a string of lights.

The boy’s room

As mentioned above, blue is no longer the preserve of boys, young or old. Even if we still like to apply it in touches, we reserve it for a single wall, a strip of wallpaper, a piece of furniture or a painting, for example.

And we offer a place of choice to green, from its pastel version to its deepest declination. Yellow can also brighten up a boy’s room. In terms of decoration, you can let your imagination run wild, while setting certain limits that must not be crossed. Finally, we say yes to the teepee, as long as it does not take up too much space.

A unisex kid’s room

Do you prefer a gender-neutral kid’s room? The room can also adopt a unisex decoration that will be just as appreciable and more durable over time. Beautiful natural colors such as white, beige, taupe or gray are preferred.

In addition, for colors with more character, shades of yellow or green are perfect. You can also choose them in a bright or more pastel version depending on the age of the child. For the furniture, you can easily opt for neutral models by choosing wood, natural or white.

The night corner of the kid’s room

You can opt for a modular bed, which will grow with your child. Otherwise, choose a single bed without a headboard. Moreover, if you prefer a raised bed, there are beds for all ages and you can create a play area on the floor just below.

Next, decorate the bed with colorful (but not bright) pillows, comforters and sheets that will blend in beautifully with the sober colors you’ve chosen for the walls. Don’t forget a pretty night light for the night.

Colors in a kid’s room

All colors are welcome, but no more than three different ones. Avoid busy atmospheres as toys and decorating accessories already bring their share of colors. Prefer simple harmonies and solid tones, pastel colors too.

You can opt for a solid color on only one of the four walls. The other three will remain white and available for personal decorating, which is a must from a certain age. Avoid friezes and themed wallpapers that children quickly tire of.

What floor in a kid’s room?

In general, hard floors are easier to maintain (and therefore considered more hygienic) but not very comfortable when it comes to playing on the floor. In fact, many hardwood floors covered with carpet.

Carpets, for a long time associated with the idea of dust nests and responsible for allergies, are today entitled to a return to grace. They are healthier, can be natural and are easier to maintain than before. They are comfortable and offer a better thermal and acoustic comfort to the room. However, carpeting requires daily vacuuming and is incompatible with underfloor heating.

The storage of a kid’s room

Apart from a miracle, few things can encourage a child to keep his room tidy! It’s up to parents to make enough storage space available to their children, and to choose storage items that are accessible and easy to handle. Think about placing closets, closets, toy chests and dressers within reach of the children: they will be even more encouraged to tidy up. Different colored boxes, one for each theme (puzzles, stuffed animals, coloring pages…) will prove to be practical for the child and will integrate perfectly into the decor.

Equipped with wheels, they can be slipped under the bed, for a real space saving. Space saving is also guaranteed thanks to a box that can be used as a bedside table, in which books and magazines can be placed. The small objects, figurines and doll clothes will remain classified thanks to “columns” of transparent drawers.

There are also a few tricks can used to increase storage options at a lower cost. Attach hooks behind doors and hang canvas bags to hold toys or laundry. Pocket panels, which you can design yourself with just a couple of strokes of the needle, will hold odds and ends, pens and small stuffed animals.

Finally, a hammock hung (at child height) between the bed and a shelf will hold all the bulkier toys.

The desk corner of the kid’s room

The desk is not essential as long as the child does his homework under the parents’ supervision because he often works elsewhere than in his room. But they usually ask for one because having a desk is like being in the “big league”.

The amount of storage space needed is proportional to the level of study: the more years go by, the more books and notebooks increase in number, not to mention the archives of past years. Therefore, a block of drawers and, above all, shelves firmly attached to the wall are required.

You can also recover an old piece of furniture – like a school desk – to make a desk in a vintage spirit. The size of the desk can also change with age. Be careful, the bigger the desk, the more clutter it can contain.

As for light, the proximity of the window is sought after. If the light has to come from the side, then it will be necessary to take into account the hand with which the child writes so that there is no shadow on his paper.

Safety in a kid’s room: it’s essential!

Kids should be able to play alone in their room at any age. Vigilance is required and a few safety precautions are necessary:

  • Install electricity according to standards: grounded outlets, equipped with outlet covers (or eclipse outlets) if they not used and located at a height of 1 m if possible. Extension cords, power strips lying on the floor, and string lights within reach should avoided and only NF lighting fixtures should installed.
  • Reduce the risks of falling : no child in a high bed before 6 years old (and even after if the child is turbulent). High beds must be equipped with safety barriers. Also, do not store toys and other everyday objects high up.
  • Equipped the window with a system that prevents the child from opening it alone and avoid placing a piece of furniture that can used as a step underneath (such as a toy box).
  • Avoid curtain or blind cords : a young child could play with them and strangle.
  • If you use chests, glue small pieces of cork to the two front corners of the flaps to prevent them from closing violently.
  • Drawers and cabinets should have a safety latch. Also consider that the latter are a coveted hiding place, a system must allow to open them from the inside.

As far as heating is concerned, the ideal temperature is 20°C. In winter, use an electric convector heater and in summer a mobile air conditioner. When the radiators are hot, it’s easy to get burned: provide a cover on top of the radiators to put books and toys on.

In terms of lighting, the main light source should be bright enough and provided by a suspension, a floor lamp or a wall lamp. Then opt for auxiliary lamps, which allow you to vary the atmosphere: subdued light for the evening, brighter for work…

Note that in this last case, the lamp placed at 60 cm from the child. Finally, for children who don’t like the dark, there are nice night lights for all budgets.

Cleaning a kid’s room

When cleaning this room, there are a couple of basic things to keep in mind that will save you a lot of hassle:

  • Choose fabrics that are easy to care for, machine washable and wrinkle resistant
  • Choose a floor that is easy to clean and stain-resistant. Why not a laminate or synthetic floor? Long relegated to the background, they are now enjoying a resurgence of imagination and sold in various patterns and colors. If you prefer carpet, choose a stain-resistant carpet. For more comfort on this floor, which is destined to become a playground, you can place colored and soft rugs here and there.

The different themes of kid’s room

Here are some popular themes for kid’s rooms and tips on how to design them:

Outer space:

To design an outer space themed room, you can paint the walls dark blue or black and add glow-in-the-dark stars and planets. Decorate with space-themed bedding, curtains, and posters. You can also add a rocket-shaped lamp and a space-themed rug to complete the look.

Football Theme

Football is more than just a sport—it’s a passion. If your kid loves football, why not turn their room into a football paradise? Designing a football-themed room is a fun way to nurture their love for the sport. Let us guide you through the process of creating a space your child will love.

  • Choosing the Right Color Scheme Classic green, white, and black are excellent choices, as they mimic the colors of a football field. These hues can serve as the backdrop for the room’s decor and furnishings.
  • Football-Inspired Wall Decor The walls are your canvas for football-inspired creativity. Consider decorating with football-themed wall decals, posters of your child’s favorite players, or even a mural of a football stadium. These elements not only add excitement to the room but also make your child feel immersed in the world of football.
  • Furniture and Bedding Choose furniture that complements the football theme. A bed shaped like a football or one with football-themed bedding can be the focal point of the room. Look for furniture pieces with storage compartments to keep football gear organized.
  • Accessorizing with Football Memorabilia Add a personal touch to the room with football memorabilia. Display jerseys, signed footballs, or miniature trophies on shelves or in glass cabinets. These items not only add character to the room but also celebrate your child’s love for the sport.
  • Personalized Football Field One exciting idea is to create a mini football field on the floor using artificial grass or a football-themed rug. This not only adds an interactive element to the room but also provides a designated play area for football-related activities.
  • Lighting for the Football Enthusiast Proper lighting can enhance the football ambiance. Consider pendant lights or table lamps with football-inspired designs. You can even find lamps shaped like football helmets or footballs themselves.
